Weekly Inspiration for the Week of March 25, 2019

This week has been a whirlwind of activity. With my son’s school closing for Spring Break and an upcoming trip up to my hometown of Danville, there’s lots to get done in our household. Finding time to just sit and be creative when all around you is chaos can be a bit overwhelming and yet, as a freelancing dad, I try to find a way to thrive in the center of the toddler tornado. It isn’t easy, but a few things that have really helped is to make sure that when I do have that time, I really focus on one task at hand. That way, I don’t feel too scrambled like a chicken with it’s head cut off. Being able to look at my to-do list and picking one thing that I know I can cross off makes a big difference. With that being said, here’s some of the things that have been helping me smile during the mayhem…

  • Music Inspiration:

Wild Belle - Everybody One of a Kind: I’ve been a fan of Wild Belle ever since their first album in 2013. I’m also super stoked that they are coming to visit Santa Barbara at the end of the month. They are 2 siblings, Eliot and Natalie Bergman from Chicago that are able to infuse a wide variety of genre influences into their music and make for memorable, melodic, unique, and satisfying songs. This new album is no exception. From the first song Rocksteady I knew they had done it again! Each song has it’s own emotive quality that is just breathtaking. Check out their webpage which is loaded with tons of their best music videos here… https://www.wildbelle.com/home

Fred Everything - No Way Home: I was also really excited to discover new music from Fred Everything this week. Fred is a French-Canadian electronic musician and DJ, best known for his work in the deep house music genre. This album explores so many different tempos and rhythms and will be played on repeat from now through summer as it’s the perfect companion to a backyard barbecue or beach trip. I’ve especially enjoyed listening while creating more positive artwork and I love how each track has a unique vibe. Check it out here… https://fredeverything.bandcamp.com/album/long-way-home

  • Artistic Inspiration:

Matt Chinworth: I found Matt’s work on Instagram and was instantly intrigued by his beautiful sense of color, composition, and storytelling. He hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma and you feel like you enter an entire universe when you look at one of Matt’s illustrations. One of my favorite recent works he did involved a brand illustration called “The future of fashion” for Mr. Porter. Matt’s ideas for concepts are super unique and I love the perspective from which he decides to engage the viewer. Check out his Instagram at “mattchinworth” or you can find his website portfolio here…www.chinworthillustration.com/

Andrea Ucini: Another artist I absolutely love is Andrea Ucini who magestically fuses brilliant conceptual work into gorgeous and colorful illustrations that immediately make your brain think and be filled with wonder. He was raised in Italy and now works from Denmark. Everytime I scroll past one of his illustrations on Instagram I immediately know it’s his and I always take the time to study and take in his smart and thoughtful concepts. Some of them are so simple yet carry so much messaging, which is one of the most difficult skills to execute. Follow him on Instagram at “andrea_ucini” or see more of his work here… https://andreaucini.com/

  • Screen Inspiration:

Conan Without Borders: How can a guy be absolutely hilarious, smart, and forward thinking his entire career? Conan seems to do it effortlessly with every new invention he undertakes into comedy. Whether its late night, podcast, or a travel show Conan never disappoints. His approach to meeting new people, self deprecation, and trying new experiences make everything he does lighthearted, witty, and hilarious. I am so glad that Conan continues to do what he does best in so many different ways. I’ve been watching him since the very first time he showed up on late night and I’m proud to say that I’ve had the opportunity to watch him grow as a comedian, human, and all around amazing guy! Check out this show on Netflix!

  • Other Inspiration:

Black Sheep in Santa Barbara: I don’t usually add restaurant reviews to my weekly inspiration but this one really stood out as a unique and awesome experience for my wife and I. We were afforded a rare night out while my In-Laws babysat for us. We decided to try this restaurant with no prior knowledge or without any friend recommendations. It was just something we found on our own on Yelp and after reading the reviews I was quite excited. It did not disappoint. Not only were the cocktails incredible and unique, but the food was impeccable. Every dish that came was beautiful to the eye and extremely delicious. I think it was one of the best meals I’ve had in Santa Barbara since living here. Not only that, but it was probably the best service I’ve received from anywhere. Our waiter was not only attentive but gracious, funny, and considerate. Even the chef stopped by our table to see how we enjoyed the food. If you are planning on visiting for a weekend, then you should definitely add this place to your list of must eats. You won’t be disappointed. Check out their menu here…https://www.blacksheepsb.com/

That’s all for this week! More inspirations to come every week! Stay tuned!
